The 10-minute used car buying checklist

Before you fall in love with the paintwork, check the paperwork: V5C logbook, MOT history and service records should all match the car and the seller.

Walk the car in daylight. Panel gaps should be even, paint should match across panels, and tyres should have at least 3mm of tread with matching brands on each axle.

Inside, test every switch. On the test drive, listen for suspension knocks over bumps and check the car tracks straight under braking.
